What to put on a memorial card for your mother

The front usually holds her photo, her full name, and her birth and passing dates under a short header such as “In Loving Memory.” Many families add her maiden name (“Mary Ellen Walsh, née O’Brien”) or the name everyone called her, like “Nana” or “Mimi.”

The back is where her personality comes through: a prayer she loved, a verse from her Bible, or one or two lines from her children. Choose a photo where she looks like herself, laughing at a family dinner often means more than a formal portrait.

Wording ideas for mom

Short lines read best on a 2.5″×4.25″ card. Use one as the header on the front or a single line on the back.

Front headers

  • In Loving Memory of Our Mother
  • Celebrating the Life of Mom
  • Forever Our Mom
  • A Mother’s Love Lives On
  • In Loving Memory of Our Mom, Grandma & Friend

Lines for the back

  • Her love was the thread that held our family together.
  • She gave us roots to grow and wings to fly.
  • A mother’s love is forever, and so is ours for you.
  • She lived for her family and loved without measure.
  • Your hands held us, your love shaped us, your memory guides us.
  • Always our mom, forever in our hearts.

From her children & grandchildren

  • Thank you, Mom, for every lunch packed and every prayer said.
  • We are who we are because she was who she was.
  • Grandma’s kitchen was always open, and so was her heart.
  • Love you forever, Mom. Until we meet again.

Bible verses for a mother’s memorial card

Quoted from the King James Version. Any of these fits on the back with room for her name.

  • “Her children arise up, and call her blessed.” — Proverbs 31:28
  • “Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.” — Proverbs 31:25
  • “Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.” — Proverbs 31:29
  • “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” — 2 Timothy 4:7
  • “In my Father’s house are many mansions… I go to prepare a place for you.” — John 14:2
  • “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.” — Revelation 21:4

Design tips families tell us they were glad they followed

  • Pick the layout to match the photo. A close portrait suits Classic; an older black-and-white photo looks timeless on Memory Of.
  • Use the name the family called her. A nickname in quotes between the first and last name is common and warm.
  • Choose her prayer. Psalm 23, the Hail Mary, and the Irish Blessing are built in, or write your own verse. See more Bible verses for memorial cards.
  • Order enough for the family to keep a few. Our guide to how many cards to order has a quick rule of thumb.

Questions families ask

What do you write on a memorial card for mom?

Most families put “In Loving Memory” with her photo, full name, and dates on the front, and a prayer, Bible verse, or one or two personal lines on the back, for example “Her love was the thread that held our family together.”

What is a good Bible verse for a mother’s funeral card?

Proverbs 31:28 (“Her children arise up, and call her blessed”) is the most popular, followed by Proverbs 31:25, 2 Timothy 4:7, and Psalm 23.

Should I include my mother’s maiden name?

It is a nice touch, especially if relatives and old friends knew her by it. The usual format is her full married name followed by “née” and her maiden name.

How quickly can I get memorial cards for my mom’s funeral?

We print and ship Monday through Saturday. Choose 2-day FedEx or UPS at checkout when the service is close; free standard shipping typically arrives 3–7 days after we ship.
