What to put on a memorial card for your father

Start with his photo, full name, and dates under “In Loving Memory” or “Celebrating the Life of.” If he went by a nickname (“Bud,” “Pop,” “Big Jim”), put it in quotes between his first and last name so everyone recognizes him.

Photos that show him doing what he loved, fishing, in his workshop, in uniform, at the grill, often say more than a studio portrait. On the back, a short verse or a line about how he lived works better than a long poem.

Bible verses for a father’s memorial card

Quoted from the King James Version.

  • “The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.” — Proverbs 20:7
  • “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:21
  • “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” — 2 Timothy 4:7
  • “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you.” — John 14:27
  • “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” — Psalm 23:1
  • “Be strong and of a good courage… for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” — Joshua 1:9

Tips for a card that feels like him

  • If he served, a photo in uniform and his branch and years make a meaningful line. See our veteran memorial cards for military wording.
  • An edge-to-edge photo works well for outdoor shots; try Photo Focus or Full Photo.
  • Keep the back to four to eight lines so the text stays large enough to read.
  • Need the service time and place on the card? The Service Details card has room for it.

Questions families ask

What do you write on a memorial card for dad?

Put his photo, full name, and dates under “In Loving Memory” on the front. On the back, add a verse such as Proverbs 20:7 or Matthew 25:21, or a short line about how he lived, like “A man of few words and a heart of gold.”

What is a good Bible verse for a father’s funeral card?

Popular choices are Proverbs 20:7 (“The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him”), Matthew 25:21, 2 Timothy 4:7, and Psalm 23.

Can I use a casual or outdoor photo of my dad?

Yes. Upload any clear photo and crop it in the live preview. Casual photos that show his personality are some of the most loved cards we print.
